Sanguinius says "get it done"!

This was the final session of teaching my bro how to paint his Blood Angels.  It wasn't much, and it wasn't clean, but we wanted to have a finished model to be the example for the rest AND to keep the eyes happy as we work through the arduous process of building an army.  We all know how discouraging the pile of gray plastic can be...

After the last post, we only had the weapons and detail bitz to paint.  Using the basecoating method, we painted all the metal on his weapons and backpack Ironbreaker.  It was okay to be sloppy as we still had to paint all the casings and such.  This was necessary as Ironbreaker is not a base paint and needed multiple layers.  After that dried, we then basecoated the weapon casings Abaddon Black.  Nothing difficult, but now we were seeing the Assault Intercessor coming to life!

To highlight the black, we used the line-highlighting method with Dark Reaper (a dark, bluish gray) and Administratum Grey.  The chest eagle and chapter symbol were going to be very hard, so we used the drybrush method.  Not our finest work, but it got the appearance for tabletop standard.

The wings from the chapter symbol were too bright, so we downgraded it to a quick line-highlight, hoping that the blood drop would get more attention.

Speaking of the blood drop- it was time!  Grabbing a dark red, a bright red (or orange), and white, we went with the old-school 'gemming' method.  Paint the detail all black or the darkest colour (I just used black and slightly regret it), then paint the bottom half with the dark colour.  Then paint the bottom half of that a brighter colour.  Then paint the bottom half of that again with the highlight colour.  Then 'cup' the bottom and dot the middle of the darkest top part with white.  One day I'll actually do a step-by-step breakdown of it, but it's such an easy technique that I forget to take pictures every time.

looks better in person, I promise!

And that's it!  The model is painted.  We drybrushed the base in gray and then stared at our work for a couple of hours before calling it a night.  All basic techniques were shared and practiced and the project completed (for now).  I'm proud- his work is much better than the average noob.  Now if I could just get my bro's confidence up there.  Oh wait- we have a BA Captain to paint!  Methinks there's a reward project coming...

Happy Hobbying!
